Mojang cannot have it both ways

Mojang built Minecraft on the promise that players could modify the game, run their own servers and ship their own tools. That promise is not a favour. It is written into the EULA, restated in the Commercial Usage Guidelines, and shown by the fact that Minecraft Java Edition ships without obfuscation-breaking DRM and with a mod ecosystem Mojang has publicly celebrated for over a decade.

Mojang sells a modding platform, then treats mods as infringement. Fabric, Forge, Loom and the official mappings all exist because Mojang lets and encourages third-party modification. Filing a copyright takedown against a mod built on those official tools treats the ecosystem as a liability instead of the product.
A client-side blacklist is platform control, not a copyright interest. Blocking a hostname in a client does not create a copyrighted work for a mod to copy. Deciding which servers a player can join is a policy choice, and the DMCA is not a policy enforcement tool.
The takedown needed no court, no judge and no adversary. One sworn form removed 15 repositories within hours. That is the whole point of the counter-notice process, and it is why overreach like this has to be documented in public instead of quietly absorbed.
We do not own AnarchyMod. We did not write it, we do not maintain it, and we take no credit for it. We host a copy because the original was removed without any legal finding against it.

Legal analysis

Why this takedown has no ground to stand on

The notice is public. So is the code. Reading the two side by side is enough to see that the claim does not match the work it accuses. What follows is a plain-language reading of the notice, not legal advice.

The notice never says what was copied. Section 3 of a DMCA notice is the part that has to identify the allegedly infringing material, and it names exactly one thing: the repository URL. No accused file, no function, no copied snippet, no side-by-side comparison. Section 2 names Minecraft as the copyrighted work, but copyright protects fixed expression — specific code and art — not the idea of a game or a vague right to control who plays on a server. The notice never connects the two.
The mod does not contain a single byte of Minecraft's compiled code. We unzipped the released jar ourselves and counted. The whole artifact is 17 entries: four .class files written by the project, three mixin classes, a 292-byte PNG icon, and small metadata files. That is all of it. No Minecraft classes, no Mojang artwork, no decompiled or extracted assets, no bundled launcher. It is a client-side Fabric mod that depends on Minecraft at runtime, which is what every Fabric mod does and what Mojang's own tooling is built to support.
The work it declares is artwork and character designs. None of it is present. Section 2 leans on U.S. Copyright registrations covering artwork and character designs featured in the game, and on the MINECRAFT trademark. Scroll the viewer above and try to find any of it. The icon is a 292-byte file made for the project. The strings in the source are server hostnames like 6b6t.org, not the MINECRAFT mark. You cannot claim artwork was copied when the accused artifact holds no artwork.
The anti-circumvention claim describes Microsoft's storefront, not Minecraft. The notice points to technological protection measures, citing Azure Active Directory sign in with license checks and compiled code and encrypted sub-components. That is a description of a distribution platform's licensing stack. Minecraft Java Edition has no equivalent protection for this mod to defeat: it ships uncompiled, to the point that Loom and the official mappings exist so third-party code can interact with it. GitHub itself wrote that it did not find sufficient information to determine a valid anti-circumvention claim.
The internal claim defeats itself. The notice argues the repository "incorporates and depends upon Minecraft intellectual property", then points at the project's own description of bypassing a server block. The mod does not ship Minecraft IP; it interoperates with Minecraft, which is the whole premise of Minecraft's modding ecosystem and is expressly contemplated by the license Mojang grants. Where an ecosystem depends on interoperability, circumventing a client-side list of hostnames is not access control over a copyrighted work. It is a disagreement about policy, and the DMCA is the wrong tool for that disagreement.
One mod, fifteen repositories, no judge. GitHub's own note records that this notice was processed against the entire network of 15 repositories, inclusive of the parent repository. The submitter did not examine each fork; they affirmed the ones they reviewed were representative and asked for all of them. Fifteen independently MIT-licensed, freely forkable projects went dark on one sworn declaration, with no chance for the authors to respond first. That is the mechanism, and it is why mirrors exist.
The licence already granted the rights being disputed. AnarchyMod is MIT licensed, copyright © 2025 6b6t. MIT grants everyone the right to use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense and sell the software. Even if every other argument here failed, the licence would still authorise this mirror, and no third party can revoke a grant the copyright holder already made to the public.

In short. The notice identifies a repository but not a copied work. It names artwork and characters that are absent from the artifact. It asserts access controls that belong to a storefront, not to Minecraft Java Edition. It leans on an anti-circumvention theory that GitHub's own reviewers found insufficient. And it targets code its authors released under a licence that expressly permits redistribution. A copyright claim has to connect a protected work to material that reproduces it. Reading this notice, that connection is never made.

Please note that the repository's stated purpose is to bypass restrictions implemented by Mojang for the server 6b6t. These restrictions were intentionally implemented as part of our player safety and platform integrity efforts following enforcement review.

The project is not merely discussing or interoperating with Minecraft. Rather, it provides software specifically designed to circumvent safeguards and restrictions implemented by Mojang and to facilitate access to a service that has been subject to enforcement action.

Additionally, the repository incorporates and depends upon Minecraft intellectual property, and the software's value proposition is explicitly tied to bypassing protections and controls built into the Minecraft ecosystem. The repository's own description advertises that it allows users to "bypass Mojang's ban," demonstrating an intent to defeat Mojang's technical and policy-based restrictions.
